Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Credit Card (SPG Amex)

AN OVERVIEW OF THE SPG CREDIT CARD

You may well have stumbled across this page because your think about signing up for the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express credit card (SPG Amex).  Before doing so make sure you take the time to read this full SPG Credit Card Review and make the most from your sign up!

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card is issued directly by American Express. You can hold up to 2 charge cards and 2 credit cards which have been issued by American Express at anyone time, although this doesn’t include Amex cards which I provided by the likes Lloyds, TSB or Barclays.

I’d recommend checking your credit rating before applying for a new card. Generally you should have a rating in excess of 700+. Click here for a free Equifax credit report and score.  It’s free for the first 30 days and then £14.95 per month afterwards (make sure you cancel in the first 30 days!).

The annual fee for the SPG American Express Credit Card is £75 which can partially be offset by the £15 cashback if you sign up through Topcashback.  Use this link to get a further £5 when you sign up to Topcashback.

THE SIGN UP BONUS – STARWOOD AMERICAN EXPRESS

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express credit card offers 10,000 Starwood Preferred Guest points when you spend £1,000 in your first three months.

Membership reward points can be directly converted to Avios and a number of other partners.

I would also highlight that if you sign up through this Topcashback link you can currently get £15 in cashback for signing up to the SPG Credit card.  By following the link you would also get a further £5 for signing up to Topcashback, making your total gain £20.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER BENEFITS OF THE STARWOOD AMEX?

When you spend £15,000 per year on the SPG amex card you’ll receive Starwood Preferred Guest Gold Status. This provides perks such as:

  • 4pm late checkout
  • Room upgrade upon check-in
  • Welcome gift on arrival (either Beverage or premium WiFi)

Whilst these are enticing if you stay in Starwood Hotels often, these come as standard with the American Express Platinum Card (however note the £450 pa fee!).

Earn 1 SPG point for virtually every £1 spent on the card. To provide an idea as to how much you would need to spend, the W London – Leicester Square would be 20,000 points per night.

Spend £25,000 per year and you’ll receive a voucher for a free weekend nights stay. This can only be included for Category 1-4 hotels making it of limited value.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE STARWOOD AMERICAN EXPRESS?

American Express no longer has a minimum income requirement for the card.

You cannot receive the sign up bonus if you have had a SPG Amex card in the last 6 months.   This does not apply to a Platinum Cashback Card, Amex Gold Card or any Amex issued by MBNA, Lloyds, Barclays.

SPG AMEX CREDIT CARD SUMMARY

The sign up bonus of 10,000 points is reasonable however partially offset by the £75 pa fee charged. There are currently a number of other cards on the market, which I feel are currently offer better value for money. Check out the American Express Gold Card for example.

If you’re looking for a hotel credit card I’d strongly recommend the Hilton Honors Card.  The card offers a free night stay in any Hilton (including Waldorf Astoria or Conrad) which can be worth up to £500.  Take a look at my recent free weekend away in Rome.

The annual fee of £75 for the Starwood Amex can be partially offset by the £20 Topcashback offer (click here for the link).
